My name is Deb'bora Imani.
I am an Author, Actor, Montessori and Drama Teacher and Gestalt Psychotherapist.
I was born and raised in the Bronx New York. I currently live in California with my husband where I work in the Drama department at my local School. I lived in the United Kingdom for 29 years. During my time there I completed my Montessori training, Diploma in Drama therapy and M.A. in Gestalt Psychotherapy. I also have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama. I began my career working with the San Francisco Mime Troupe.
I always wanted to teach and work with children so after years of performing in the United States and throughout Europe I decided to train in the United Kingdom as a Montessori Teacher.
It was during my time in the UK that I continued to grow as a performer by co-founding two musical duos. The first was called ‘Sojourner’ followed by ‘AKIMBO’ which continued for eight years.
Though I loved performing and sharing my skills with young people it became clear to me that I needed to learn more about myself and realized that, as well as being a creative vehicle, drama could also be used therapeutically.
For the nine years prior to leaving the UK I worked as a ‘Psychotherapist / Project Manager / Developer’ at the ‘Place2Be’, an organization which, for 25 years, has been providing in-school emotional support to children and young people. I successfully introduced and piloted ‘Place2Be’ in Scotland and developed a new initiative – ‘A Place for Parents’ which offered therapeutic support to parents of children who attend ‘The Place2Be’.
Over the past 25 years I have specialized in working with families, children, teenagers and young people from all walks of life. I recognize the importance of working with ‘the whole child’ within the context of different environments namely the family, community and educational settings.
It has taken me many years to write and record this audio book. I am so thankful that I can finally share my journey. As I continue on my path, I am filled with gratitude for my family and friends in the US and the UK. They have all taught me so much about unconditional love.
